The changing seasons often herald a significant change in our moods and feelings. Autumn and winter months can become dark days inside as well as outside as the lack of light, cold weather, rain and snow – all make their unique contribution to our experience. It is now generally recognised that the lack of light during the winter months significantly affects the way we feel and some more than others as in cases of SAD syndrome.
Beat the Winter Blues
Did you know that a sunny day puts out 50,000 lux and a cloudy day only 5,000 lux? There are very specific symptoms that indicate the shortage of light on our moods and behaviour:
* Depression – feelings of irritability & low self esteem * Energy swings, craving carbs & overeating * Sleep problems – oversleeping and feeling fatigued or disturbed sleep
So how can we overcome these challenging symptoms and rise above the darkness to stay bright and shiny inside and out?
Bright, full spectrum light exposure for half an hour a day has been found to be very effective in relieving all the above symptoms, either outside or from a full spectrum light bulb. Walking in nature – especially amongst trees to lift our spirits and balance our wellbeing.
And on the inside;
